TO TEAM IS A STRATEGIC CHOICE.
This is something I have always believed, whether as a participant on actual sports teams, a coach in youth sports, or a professional in the workplace contributing to a variety of teams faced
with multiple types of challenges.
Even as a long-time core belief, I am not sure I was always able
to verbalize it succinctly and explain its value in the workplace.
Clarity for me took form when I first saw the phrase above as a
statement made by author Patrick Lencioni, perhaps best known
for his work The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.
If you think about the concept of team in the workplace as
just another sports euphemism, the point is lost, along with the
potential power of what workplace teaming can achieve.
When you view the choice to team as strategic, and as such,
deem it just as important as assets you may acquire or financial
investments you might make, then you can begin to see the
infrastructure needed to truly support the concept of team.
To launch teaming as a strategic choice, you need to define it
for your organization, decide how to measure it, provide training
around it, and maybe most importantly, decide how to message
it to your employees.
The power of effective teaming in the workplace is an undeniable differentiator for companies. Make the choice.
