Kelp Forest Glass Wall
Aquarium of the Pacific, Long Beach, Calif.
A floor-to-ceiling, 126-foot-wide facade of proprietary laminated decorative glass
depicts Pacific Ocean kelp forests, creating an immersive undersea experience
inside. At night, exterior views of this backlit underwater world serve as a silent ad
for the attraction. The 26 panels of high-resolution underwater photography show a
natural marine ecosystem, including animals found off the California coast. Curving
along the outer wall of the store, the panels are illuminated by ceiling lights to mimic
sunlight dappling through the water. Combined using large-scale digital imaging
software, over 1,200 underwater mosaic photos feature detail in the background,
mid-field, and foreground areas.
