During New York Fashion Week, Ace Hotel also collaborated with
Shapeways and Michael Schmidt—known for his innovative
wardrobing and jewelry designs for clients such as Lady Gaga,
Rihanna, Deborah Harry, Dita Von Teese, and Tina Turner—to
create a one-of-a-kind 3D-printed dress. The dress was unveiled
during a Fashion Week party held at the hotel.
The fully articulated gown was designed by Schmidt and 3D modeled by
architect Francis Bitonti to be 3D printed in nylon by Shapeways in New York.
Thousands of unique components were 3D printed in a flowing mesh
designed exactly to fit Von Teese’s body. The gown was assembled, dyed
black, lacquered, and adorned with over 13,000 Swarovski crystals to create
a sensual flowing form.
The dress demonstrates the possibility of 3D printing complex, customized
fabric like garments designed exactly to meet a specific person or need.
“From 3D printing to innovative materials, fashion is one of the fields
that best demonstrates the capability to combine design, creativity, and
advanced materials,” said Michele Caniato, president of Material ConneXion.
“This industry predicts trends and transforms them into reality; we have the
materials that can make this happen.”
