Mall of America, Bloomington, Minn.
The scale, dimensionality, and unique material usage make this design element
stand out in the busy mall. Mosaic tile in undulating surfaces shaped as leaves
creates a lasting first impression. One leaf canopies the entrance, while others blend seamlessly with windows offering glimpses inside. Vacuum formed,
machined, and hand-worked, the leaf shapes feature vertical-grain fir that has
been wire brushed and whitewashed. Also used were modeling foam, bending
luan, fir plywood, and plastic laminate. The tile was produced by local tile artist
Mercedes Austin and installed without closing the store.
