Women’s plus-sizes apparel leader
Lane Bryant will focus on organic
growth in its first full year under
new owner, Ascena Retail Group.
Lane Bryant and affiliate Lane
Bryant Outlet will finish the fiscal
year in late July with 30 new
stores, including 21 through the
end of the second quarter, after
years of closing more stores than it
opened. The company’s long-term
prospects call for it to grow from
815 stores to 1,000 system wide.
Torrid, a division of Hot Topic
Inc., will provide the biggest challenge as it plans 40 openings this
year, following its 44 openings in
2012. C.J. Banks and The Avenue
also have their own freestanding
plus-size stores, but neither will
be growing at the pace of Lane
Bryant or Hot Topic.
The Limited is the newest entry
in the plus-size field. It will open
its first two brick-and-mortar
plus-size stores this year, doing

business as Eloquii by the Limited.
Fashion retailers Hennes & Mauritz
(H&M) and Lucky Brand Jeans are
giving plus sizes more prominent
positions in their respective stores,
although neither has opened
stand-alone plus-size-only stores
Lane Bryant/Lane Bryant Outlet
and Torrid will also be busy relo-
cating their mall locations to strip
centers over the next few years.
Most of Lane Bryant’s relocations
will involve the move of mall loca-
tions to strip centers.
