ability programs, but balance environ
mental goals with design aesthetics and
functionality. But don’t be shy about
entering a project that doesn’t have a long
laundry list of green features, as judges
also single out specific elements for com
mendation. If your team found a unique
way to accomplish a sustainable objective,
it might well capture judges’ attention.

Here are some tips for making the best
impression on the judges:
•;Be thorough on the entry form. Bare
bones responses do your project a disservice.
Judges have remarked that some projects
seem like they might be very sustainable,
but they were unable to score them highly
due to inadequate information. Take the
time to obtain details from your team and
provide complete answers.
•;List as many sustainable features as pos
sible; explain how your team solved envi
ronmental challenges, and cite any solutions
that resulted from disparate entities working
•;Think beyond the obvious benchmarks.
In addition to any building standards and
material product certifications, include met
rics specific to your project. For instance,
more than half the furnishings for one win
ning project were reused.
•Include closeup shots and diagrams
that help judges understand specific sustain
able features. For instance, a diagram may
illustrate a wastetoenergy solution better
than a photo.
Your standalone or tenant improve
ment project can be entered into the A.R.E.
Sustainability Awards competition in combi
nation with a general A.R.E. Design Awards
entry. Entries may be submitted by retailers,
designers, architects, or suppliers of projects
installed in operating retail environments
between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2011. See entry
