A Light at the
End of the Tunnel
Ah, the excitement of GlobalShop!
i arrived in Las Vegas early Sunday morning,
march 27, eager to assist my team in setting
up the booth before the A.R.e. board meeting. (my set-up team gently declined my
expertise and requested that i tour the floor,
as apparently there is a feeling that it takes
twice as long to set up when i “help.”)
So, i walked the floor to take a look at the
larger exposition space—up 10 percent to
181,000 square feet—and the returning
and new exhibitors—131 first-time exhibitors this year. tim Fearney, GlobalShop director, happily
reported the results of 2011 show: “GlobalShop saw significant growth in 2011 with a professional attendance of over
10,000 participants. A 13 percent increase in expo and confer-
ence attendance across the board resulted in over 5,750 quali-
fied attendees visiting the show this year.”
my experience was the same. Our first-day booth traffic
was up 75 percent, and traffic was up 30 percent for all three
days. An informal survey of my exhibiting A.R.e. friends indi-
cated similar increases. GlobalShop 2011 showed us there is a
light at the end of the tunnel, and, of course, a good time was
had by all!
the store features a 15 by 9 foot woven
sculpture of hand cut logs of pine wrapped
in twine. it’s pretty impressive—you can
check it out, and all of the winners, in the
Winners Book bound into this issue.
WHAT, EXACTLY, IS THAT LIGHT?
Just as the feeling at GlobalShop was
upbeat, economic trends seem to be moving in the right direction as well. As of press
time, U.S. unemployment is down to 8. 8
percent, the lowest it’s been in two years.
Gross domestic product was up 2. 4 percent
in march, and retail sales saw a 9 percent
average increase in march sales. i am beginning to believe that the light at the end of
the tunnel is no longer a freight train bearing down on me.
CONNECT WITH SUPPLIERS
An exciting new application (two, really), which A.R.e. released
at GlobalShop, is now available through the A.R.e. website.
mobile and desktop versions of Supplier|connect are available to help you find qualified partners for your retail environment challenges. Both provide fast access to the most
up-to-date information about A.R.e. members; search by name,
by product or service, or through materials used. Visit
www.retailenvironments.org for links to download both
versions. it’s so easy even i can use it!
SEE A.R.E.’S WINNERS
my favorite event at GlobalShop is the A.R.e. Design Awards
program, which takes place in the Venetian Ballroom just
after the close of the first day of the show. christine Sturch
of Whole Foods market did an exceptional job as emcee of the
event. She had just the right amount of sophistication, humor,
and the occasional groove move. This year, Wenger, maker of
the Swiss Army Knife, took home the Store of the Year award.
Well, that all i have to say; i’ll talk to you in a couple months.
By the way, let me know if you need any help setting up your
booth at GlobalShop next year. i’m available.
