The initial numbers from Nielsen show significant growth in attendance in 2011, with
a 13 percent increase in expo and conference attendance overall. There was also more
for attendees to see on the floor of the Sands Expo and Convention Center, with a 10 percent
increase in the show’s exhibit space and more than 130 first-time exhibitors.

While not all are new, here are a few terms we heard that we expect to contribute to the future shape of retail environments: Convergence multichannel consis- tency in brand expression from bricks to clicks, bringing together online, physical store, and mobile web into a coherent, harmonized experience Dotted lines initial attempts to connect silos within an organization M-generation born after 1990, 16- to 20-year-olds who have no re- collection of life without the Internet; addicted to smartphone and other devices that use the mobile web Personal Experience Retail (PRX) trend of personalizing the retail experience to each individual; delivering the best of the digital world in the physical store environment Fourth Place the digital community, including social media and gaming. Even that epitomy of Third Place, Starbucks, is paying close attention to ensure that it connects the two places Place marking brands opening physical stores that promote the brand, focusing on quality of interaction between person and displays and/or person and staff, without actually selling any merchandise Fragmented the European im- pression of the North American retail environments industry. Compared with the one-stop-shop model of shopfitting, the North American model of multiple disciplines is alien to European retailers, but both models have pros and cons.
