Industry Professionals Gather
in New Orleans for Design Awards Judging
Judging of A.R.E.’s 2011 Design Awards took place January 27 and 28 in New Orleans. Based
on the judges’ decisions, 54 awards will be presented in 23 categories of retail design, plus a
Fixture of the Year, Visual Presentation of the Year, and a Store of the Year. This year’s program
also includes awards for store fixtures, visual presentation, flooring, lighting, in-store communications, and wall treatments.
Judging the competition were: Mitch Abbott, The Rockport Company; Luiz Andrade, Sony
Electronics Inc.; Jessie Bove, DDI magazine; Anne Dinardo, VMSD magazine; Elizabeth Dowd,
REI; Katherine Field, Chain Store Age; Danette Kroll, Foot Locker Inc.; and Charles Sparks,
Charles Sparks & Co.

A.R.E.’s Sustainability Awards will also be announced during the Design Awards presentation
March 28. The only competition focused on sustainable retail design, the Sustainability Awards
program will honor three retail projects for outstanding green building achievement. Entries
were judged online by A.R.E.’s Sustainability Council, a group of designers and suppliers with
various perspectives and expertise in sustainable retail design.
Judging this year’s sustainability entries were: John Blattel, EMI Industries; Nancy Everhart,
AIA, CDT, NCARB, LEED AP, Little; Bob Johnson, bjohnson Design; Michael Payne, AIA, NCARB,
mikemade design; Bob Riley, DSA/Phototech; Lisa Russell, LEED AP, Ecoxera; Richard Shelley,
LEED AP, Fetzer Architectural Woodwork; Lisa Thompson, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP, idX Corporation;
Rick Troxel, Roseburg; and Wesley Woelfel, Greneker.
