The drive-through grocer was given a new design and store branding with iconic barn
architecture that catches the eye without being cliché. New branding with rooster and
sunrise imagery, along with a fresh color palette, are used throughout the space. A glass
façade with tiered merchandising allows greater visibility and a 12-foot digital display
also illuminates product assortment, both of which allow drive-by customers to get a
sense of product quickly. The shoppable store area glows at night, while the exterior is lit
with dramatic spot lighting to highlight graphic and architectural elements. An integrated
digital communications system consisting of a pylon LED sign increases visibility from the
street while digital menu boards help shoppers move through the space quickly.

GRAND prize Landmark Supermarket Makati, Philippines
Renovating a 66,450-square-foot supermarket that occupies a windowless
basement with only 11-foot-high ceilings, designers used visual elements to
bring new life into the grocery store. Light-colored, floating planes and bowl
shapes suspended below the exposed ceiling structure create a sense of spaciousness, perimeter specialty department walls were layered with decorative, vertical design elements and concealed lighting, and curved display cases
along perimeter walls add more visual interest. Because deforestation is a
problem in the Philippines, making wood fixtures expensive and rare, painted
gypsum board and glass-fiber-reinforced gypsum shapes were used to bring in
an inexpensive wood fixture element.

Every finish, color, fixture, theme, and visual element of this Whole Foods was chosen to connect
with Chicago’s urban environment, neighborhoods, and people, while remaining true to Whole
Foods Market’s commitment to green building and sustainability. The store includes reclaimed
brick on supporting walls, low-VOC paint on drywall, and wall treatments using local, sustainable
materials. Local graffiti artists were brought in to decorate feature walls, which were otherwise
unfinished. Other efforts include energy-efficient LED bulbs, recycled lighting, and sensors in frozen food cases and non-sales areas that monitor motion, and daylight sensors to monitor store
illumination. The result is a greener store designers themed, “All of Chicago in One Place.”
