DEVELOPMENT OF LEED FOR RETAIL
The Retail Core Committee, a volunteer
group of industry experts including retailers, consultants, architects, and developers
used their market knowledge and experience to shape the two rating systems into
what they are today. In addition, 95 individual pilot project teams provided real-world
feedback throughout the development process. This feedback loop allowed USGBC and
the Retail Core Committee to feel confident
that LEED for Retail was meeting the needs
of this important market.
Following the standard LEED rating
system development process, USGBC held
public comment periods during which
its members made suggestions on how to
improve the rating systems. Each suggestion was reviewed and changes were made
by the Retail Core Committee if warranted.
In March 2010, USGBC membership voted
on and approved the LEED for Retail rating
systems by an overwhelming 92 percent.

REI’s Boulder store, a LEED for Retail pilot project, was build to meet LEED for Retail-CI Silver
certification standards, but actually received Gold certification. The store incorporates renewable
and recyclable materials for fixtures, as well as a wide array of energy-efficient systems, and
includes fixtures built of pressed bamboo and steel with low-VOC waterborne finishes.
